Students
have been admonished on the danger of
indiscriminate use of drugs and other harmful
substances.

Dr. Dokun Adedeji, the Director of Christ
Against Drug Abuse Ministry (CADAM), handed
down this message during the third
“Maximizing My Stay on Campus Seminar”
held recently on Covenant University’s
premises in Ota, Ogun State.

According to Dr. Adedeji, who was Guest
Speaker at the seminar, “Nigeria had hitherto
been adjudged to be just a drug transit nation,
but emerging statistics have shown that the
country is now a drug user nation owing to the
growing trend of rising drug abuse and
addiction amongst the teeming youths of the
country”.

Speaking further on the subject, Dr. Adedeji
revealed that young adults of the age range
between 15 and 29 years have been found to
constitute about 90% of population of drug
addicts and abusers and the children of the
affluent constitute the largest of this lot.

The CADAM Director gave many instances of
how some intelligent teenagers and young
adults have wasted their lives with drug
substances like marijuana, heroin, cocaine,
ecstasy and many other harmful substances.
He used the occasion to implore the students
on the need for them to be careful about
drinking with strangers so as not to fall victim
of being poisoned by unscrupulous young men
who are now into poisoning drinks of
unsuspecting ladies in order to take advantage
of them.

Adedeji also warned parents to monitor their
wards and know them more, since some young
adults live double lives; having gone deep into
illicit drug use while pretending that they are
not.
